GOOGLE’S BIG DADDY
The general quality of SERPs was significantly impacted by Google’s Big Daddy, a significant infrastructure change that started to roll out in December 2005.
Big Daddy was more than just a change to ranking algorithms; it was a significant infrastructure-level modification to Google’s crawling, indexing, and handling of websites.
It altered the way Google handled technical SEO elements, such as URL canonicalisation, handling 301/302 redirects, and evaluating inbound and outbound connections to determine the reliability and trustworthiness of a website.
GOOGLE’S EMD
Exact match domain names were the focus of the 2012 Google algorithm upgrade known as the EMD, or Exact Match Domain update.
A domain name that precisely matches a keyword that users search for is known as an Exact Match Domain (EMD). For example, buyshoesonline.com is the domain name for the keyword “buy shoes online”. In the past, many low-quality websites quickly rose in Google ranks because EMDs were easily rated just because the domain contained the target keyword. However, after Google’s EMD Update in 2012, this advantage was decreased, and now simply possessing an EMD doesn’t guarantee high rankings. EMDs can still help with relevance today and occasionally increase click-through rates, but they only function well when backlinks, high-quality content, appropriate SEO, and a positive user experience are in place. While EMDs are excellent for specialised or affiliate sites, brandable names are usually better for long-term authority and growth.
GOOGLE’S PIGEON
The Google Pigeon Update, announced on July 24, 2014, was a major local search algorithm modification meant to give more accurate and relevant local results by linking Google’s local search engine more closely with its main organic search algorithm. This upgrade improves how Google understands location and distance, offering consumers results based on proximity while prioritising companies with excellent SEO, solid website authority, and consistent NAP information (Name, Address, Phone). Pigeon also altered the local search landscape by lowering the size of local packs and increasing high-quality directories and review sites, making local SEO more competitive. Overall, it urged businesses to focus on website optimisation, citations, reviews, and a strong online presence to rank better in local search results.
GOOGLE’S CAFFEINE
Launched in June 2010, the Google Caffeine Update was a significant redesign of Google’s indexing engine with the goal of improving the speed, comprehensiveness, and freshness of search results. Google Caffeine enabled continuous, real-time indexing rather than refreshing the index in big batches, which meant that new sites, blog posts, news, and other information could show up in search results considerably more quickly. This update dramatically enhanced crawling speed, storage capacity, and the ability to index more web pages, enhancing the visibility of regularly updated material like news sites and blogs. All things considered, caffeine made Google searches quicker and more current, which encouraged website owners to consistently post new, high-quality content for improved ranking prospects.
GOOGLE’S JAGGER
The goal of the Google Jagger Update, which was implemented in three stages between September and November 2005, was to enhance Google’s evaluation of backlinks and penalise deceptive SEO strategies. It targeted tactics including purchased links, reciprocal linking, link farms, and unnatural link schemes that artificially raised ranks. Additionally, Jagger altered Google’s approach to canonical problems, redirects, and duplicate content, assisting in the cleanup of spam-filled websites and rewarding those with organic, reputable link profiles. As a result, many low-quality sites faced ranking decreases, while websites with legitimate backlinks, clear technical SEO, and original content gained. This upgrade represented one of Google’s early attempts towards preventing black-hat link building and boosting trustworthy, high-quality websites
